Key takeaways
- Robinhood Chain gas is paid in ETH, so every buy, sell and approval needs a little ETH in your wallet.
- Most of the time fees sit at a floor of 0.02 gwei. In the late-August rush, the median swap cost about $0.48, up from about $0.01.
- A gas subsidy for Robinhood Wallet users was reported to end on 29 September 2026. Robinhood hasn't published its details in the chain docs.
- Paying a higher fee does not move your transaction ahead, because Robinhood Chain orders transactions first-come, first-served.
- Failed transactions still cost gas, so check before you spam retries on a token that won't sell.

Gas on Robinhood Chain is paid in ETH [1]. Most of the time it's cheap. Fees sit at a floor of 0.02 gwei, and a swap costs around a cent or less. It isn't free, though. The gas subsidy for Robinhood Wallet users was reported to end on 29 September 2026 [3][4][5]. In the late-August memecoin rush the gas price rose about 25 times in 11 days [2]. And because Robinhood Chain processes transactions first-come, first-served, paying more gas won't get you in first [6].
What do you pay gas with on Robinhood Chain?
You pay in ETH held on Robinhood Chain, not on Ethereum mainnet. Robinhood's documentation says the chain "uses ETH as its native gas token" [1]. You can't pay gas with stablecoins or with the memecoin you're trading.
If you're new to the chain, bridge a small amount of ETH first. See how to bridge to Robinhood Chain. Then add the network to your wallet (chain ID 4663) [7].
How are Robinhood Chain fees calculated?
Every transaction fee has two parts, which Robinhood's docs describe as an "L2 execution fee" and an "L1 data fee". "Both components are bundled into the gas your transaction pays" [1].
- L2 execution fee. This is the cost of running your transaction on Robinhood Chain. It's the gas used multiplied by the chain's gas price. The price has a floor of 0.02 gwei [2].
- L1 data fee. Robinhood Chain posts transaction data to Ethereum, and a share of that cost is included in your gas. For a simple transfer this component is small.
In practice you see a single fee estimate in your wallet before you sign. That's the number to check.
What does a swap actually cost?
It depends entirely on how busy the chain is. Bitquery tracked the gas price between 22 August and 3 September 2026, as memecoin launches surged [2].
| Measure (Bitquery, 22 Aug → 3 Sep 2026) | Before | Peak |
|---|---|---|
| Gas price | 0.020 gwei | 0.511 gwei |
| Median transaction cost | $0.006 | $0.20 |
| Median swap through the main router | $0.012 | $0.48 |
| Fees collected per day | $54,701 | $4,503,705 |
Data from Bitquery, "Robinhood Chain's gas price went up 25 times in 11 days", 4 September 2026 [2].
By 28 September the base fee had fallen back to the 0.02 gwei floor (our check of the public RPC at 11:22 UTC). At that level, fees are a rounding error for most trades. During a rush they aren't. On 3 September, Bitquery counted about 15,000 swaps that paid more in gas than the trade was worth [2].
Is gas still free on Robinhood Chain?
Assume not. CoinDesk reported in August that "Robinhood is covering gas fees through roughly late September" [3]. Later reports described it as a 90-day gas subsidy for Robinhood Wallet users ending on 29 September 2026 [4][5].
Robinhood's chain documentation doesn't describe the subsidy, its scope or its end date, so treat these details as reported rather than official. From 30 September, budget for your own gas in ETH, whichever wallet you use.
Does paying more gas get your transaction in first?
No, and this is the most important difference from Ethereum mainnet. Robinhood's docs are explicit [6].
"Robinhood Chain employs a first-come, first-served model based on sequencer arrival time. Priority gas auctions do not exist here."
As a result, the docs add, "increasing your fee will not shift your transaction ahead of others already in the queue."
Bitquery's data backs this up. On 2 September, 7.4 million transactions, about 60% of the day's total, offered to pay above the network price, and none was charged above it [2]. Raising your "priority fee" in your wallet doesn't buy you anything.
Here's what this means for trading.
- Speed comes from being early, not from outbidding. Finding and checking a token before others do matters more than fee settings. Our guide to Robinhood Chain's sequencer explains why.
- Don't overpay out of habit. Wallet presets built for Ethereum mainnet can suggest high priority fees that do nothing here.
Why do failed transactions still cost gas?
When a transaction fails, the network has already done the work of running it up to the point of failure, so you pay for that work. On memecoins, these are the usual causes of failure.
- Slippage limits that the price moved past.
- A missing approval for the token you're selling.
- A token contract that blocks or taxes selling, which is how a honeypot works.
Repeatedly retrying a sell that can't succeed just burns ETH. If a sell fails twice, stop and diagnose it first. Our can't-sell troubleshooting guide walks through each cause.
How do you avoid getting stuck without gas?
- Keep an ETH buffer on Robinhood Chain. Hold enough ETH for several transactions beyond your buy, including the approval and the sell.
- Check the fee estimate before signing. Compare it with the trade size. If gas is a meaningful share of the trade, wait or trade larger, less often.
- Don't raise priority fees. They don't change your place in the queue on Robinhood Chain.
- Set slippage deliberately. Tight enough to avoid a bad fill, loose enough not to fail on normal movement. Every failure still costs gas.
- Stop after two failed sells. Diagnose before retrying. A token that won't sell may be a honeypot, and no amount of gas will fix that.
- Check the token before you buy it. The cheapest gas is the gas you don't spend getting into something you can't get out of.

How can you check current gas yourself?
- In your wallet. The fee estimate shown before you sign is the most practical number.
- On the explorer. The official block explorer, robinhoodchain.blockscout.com, shows each transaction's fee, so you can see what similar trades paid [7].
- For developers. Query the public RPC listed in Robinhood's docs,
https://rpc.mainnet.chain.robinhood.com, for the latest block's base fee. It's rate-limited and not meant for production use [7].
The bottom line
Gas on Robinhood Chain is usually cheap and always paid in ETH. It spikes when launches surge, and it doesn't reward paying extra, because ordering is first-come, first-served. Keep a small ETH buffer, don't burn gas retrying a sell that can't succeed, and spend your attention on checking tokens rather than tuning fees.

Frequently asked questions
What token do I pay gas with on Robinhood Chain?
ETH. Robinhood's documentation states that Robinhood Chain uses ETH as its native gas token. You need ETH on Robinhood Chain itself, not on Ethereum mainnet, so bridge a small amount before you trade. Stablecoins and memecoins can't pay for gas.
Is gas free on Robinhood Chain?
No. CoinDesk reported in August that Robinhood was covering gas fees through roughly late September, and other outlets reported a 90-day gas subsidy for Robinhood Wallet users ending on 29 September 2026. Robinhood's chain docs don't describe the subsidy, so plan to pay your own gas in ETH.
Will paying a higher gas price get my buy in first?
No. Robinhood Chain orders transactions by the time they reach its sequencer, not by the fee paid. Robinhood's docs say increasing your fee 'will not shift your transaction ahead of others already in the queue.' Being early depends on finding and checking tokens sooner, not on outbidding other traders.
Why did my failed transaction still cost me gas?
Because the network did the work of running it before it failed. A swap can revert for slippage, a missing approval or a token that blocks selling, and you still pay for the computation. On 3 September, Bitquery counted about 15,000 swaps that paid more in gas than the trade was worth.
How much does a swap on Robinhood Chain cost?
It depends on congestion. At the fee floor, a swap costs around a cent or less. During the late-August spike, Bitquery measured the median swap through the main router at $0.48. Your wallet shows an estimate before you sign, so check it against the size of your trade.
