What is a token approval?

Updated Sep 28, 2026

Permission you give a smart contract to move a specific token from your wallet. Unlimited approvals to malicious contracts are a common way wallets get drained.

A token approval, or allowance, is a permission you sign that lets a smart contract move a specific token from your wallet, up to a set amount. Decentralised exchanges need approvals to swap your tokens.

The risk

Many apps ask for unlimited approvals for convenience. If you approve a malicious contract, or a legitimate one that is later exploited, it can move that token out of your wallet at any time, without asking again.

Good habits

  • Read what you're signing. Wallets show which contract you're approving and for how much.
  • Prefer approving only the amount you need.
  • Review and revoke old approvals regularly with a reputable approval checker (many block explorers include one).
  • Use a separate "trading wallet" with limited funds for memecoins.
